Nurse-midwives are
certified by the
American
College of Nurse-Midwives and are qualified to provide total care for
the patients they have identified as low risk. If a problem is
identified, such as an abnormal Pap swear or diabetes in pregnancy, a
physician will join Cindy for collaborative management.
What are the advantages
of seeing a nurse-midwife for your pregnancy or gynecologic care? Since
nurse-midwives are trained to deal only with low risk situations, she
will have more time to spend with you in labor and during your office
visits. Physician training emphasizes disease identification and
management; nurse-midwives have extensive training in nutrition,
education, breast-feeding, counseling, and natural childbirth
techniques. Since Cindy is less likely to be called away to the
emergency room, attend a high risk deliver, or be in surgery, she will
also be a convenient resource for patents with non-emergent office
problems such as urinary tract infection, vaginal infection, birth
control counseling, and Pap tests.
What are the
disadvantages? Certain patients are not good candidates for
nurse-midwife care. High risk pregnancy, patients with certain medical
conditions who are contemplating –pregnancy complex gynecologic
problems, and problems requiring surgery are best managed by a
physician. Patients who develop a problem may need to have their care
transferred to a physician. However, many medical problems can be safely
managed with a team effort among patient, nurse-midwife, and physician.
Whether you choose to see
one of our physicians, or our nurse-midwives, Consultants in Ob / Gyn
is excited that we can now offer our patients a new choice for their
health care.
